Our Vision and Mission

"HOME SWEET HOME FOR THE HOMELESS" is a special unit of Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS), situated in Nanoi, a vibrant picturesque place in the Nagaon district of Assam. The initiative, also known as ‘A ROOF FOR THE TRAMP / VAGRANT HOME’ or ‘Grihoheen er griho’, was both envisioned and envisaged by the young and promising Sishir Maharaj. Sishir Maharaj, a young sanyasi, is carrying forward the legacy of Guru Maharaj in a true sense, aiming for all-round societal development.

We believe that those who are aged and no longer economically productive have the equal right to live with dignity. This project is particularly focused on individuals who have no home and no guardians. Our society is for those who lack a source of income, a home, and people to take care of them. Their life experiences and past are viewed as a guiding stick and torch, making their contribution an integral part of our collective progress.

The project has received attention and support from the hon’ble CM of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma, who has pledged to be behind the journey to ensure its complete success.

Establishment and Milestones

The Foundation stone (BHUMIPUJAN) was laid in the year 2023 by Swamy Sadhanananda, Secretary of BSS, NE. The opening ceremony took place in 2024 on the auspicious day of Dhanteras, performed by MLA Hon’ble Jeetu Goswami, and under the guidance of Swamy Sadhanananda.

In 2024, the campus and surrounding area were blessed by 108 Yajnas performed simultaneously, generating a powerful vibe for world peace. A major spiritual event took place on March 23rd, 2025, when the campus was blessed with a program of Geeta Path by 1,000 people simultaneously, witnessed by 3,500 attendees.

Our Unique Concept: The Gurukul System

The fundamental concept of the home is that of a Gurukul system. It is designed to be more of a homely concept than just an old age home or a students’ hostel.

We strive to create a cohesive environment:

  • For the Students: The students residing here receive education in both general and Vedic concepts, through the studies and practices of Veda, Upanishad, and Sanatan Dharma. Staying with the old people allows the students to feel the comfort of home under the guidance and care of "grandparents".
  • For the Elders: The old residents, in turn, feel the same level of comfort and affection in the company of the children, akin to being with their "grandchildren".

Capacity and Services

The proposed project has an intake capacity of 130 persons. This capacity is divided among 80 persons from old age, 30 students who have no guardians, and 20 staff members chosen from backgrounds where they need a job and possess the mindset of serving others. Currently, the home benefits 20 old age people and 2 students.

The campus is comprised of five buildings, which includes a temple, and all rooms feature an attached toilet.

Inmate welfare includes:

  • Weekly general checkups and monthly visits by a medical practitioner.
  • Access to the campus’s own Ambulance.
  • Filtered drinking water facility and a washing machine.
  • A meticulously set food menu designed to avoid monotonous meals and bring a flavourful joy to the dishes.
  • Inmates go for a spiritual or entertainment tour once a month.

Daily Life and Participation

Puja and path are central to the ashram routine and occur thrice a day—morning, noon time, and evening. All inmates are required to attend and participate in any productive way they can, such as keertan, playing instruments, chanting prayers, arranging puja rituals, or singing bhajans, even if limited by old age.

We also support the needy in the local community through regular distributions: inmates and local needy people receive dresses twice a year (before Durga Puja and during winter with winter garments), and umbrellas are gifted during the monsoon season.
